Shardul Thakur's impressive innings of 68 runs off just 29 balls, combined with exceptional performances from spinners Varun Chakravarthy, Suyash Sharma, and Sunil Narine, helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secure their first points of IPL 2023 with a resounding 81-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Despite a shaky start with the bat, including a first-ball duck for Andre Russell, Rahmanullah Gurbaz's crucial knock of 57 off 44 balls provided some stability for KKR. However, it was Shardul Thakur's aggressive batting display that turned the tables on RCB's bowlers. He smashed boundaries and sixes, hitting a joint-quickest half-century of the season in just 20 balls. Rinku Singh also played a supporting role, contributing 46 runs off 33 balls as he and Shardul added 103 runs for the sixth wicket. KKR's total of 204/7 was a challenging target for RCB.
In response, RCB started well with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plesis smashing 42 runs off the first four overs. However, KKR's spinners, especially Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravathy, turned the game around. Kohli was bowled by Narine, and Chakravathy's googlies deceived RCB's batsmen, resulting in three crucial wickets. Suyash Sharma, making his debut for KKR at the age of 19, also impressed with three wickets, including the important dismissals of Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik. RCB's chase fell apart, and they were eventually bowled out for 123 in the 18th over, giving KKR a comprehensive victory of 81 runs.
While RCB's batting struggled and their death bowling was poor, David Willey's performance was a bright spot. He bowled a double-wicket maiden and finished with figures of 2 for 16. Karn Sharma, who had performed well in the previous match against Mumbai Indians, also impressed with 2 for 26. However, their efforts were not enough to prevent KKR from posting a formidable total and securing a convincing win.
Next, RCB will return home to the Chinnaswamy stadium to face LSG on April 10, while KKR will travel to Ahmedabad to take on the defending champions on April 9.
